The former states of the Eastern Bloc share cultural, social and architectural heritage. Applying communist ideology to the city planning has significantly changed the perception of urban space and social and cultural life in East-Central European cities. To celebrate ECC 2016 in Wroclaw Nowe Żerniki (a model residential area) is going to be established. Introducing culture to the concrete housing estates was also one of the most important objectives of the ECC in Košice. Do the historically and politically burdened concrete cities offer any room for beauty? Does living in the big blocks of flats guarantee a sense of community?

PAWEŁ JAWORSKI (Katowice) – a philosopher and an architect engaged in spatial development and town planning. He is a member of the Society of Polish Town Planners in Katowice and a social activist associated with “Napraw Sobie Miasto” Foundation in Katowice.
IWONA BOROWIK (Wroclaw) – an urban sociologist and a lecturer at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Wrocław. She is an author of several scientific publications, including “The Humanization of Housing Estates” (1996), „Blokowiska – miejski habitat w oglądzie socjologicznym. Studium jakości wrocławskich środowisk mieszkaniowych” (2003), „W poszukiwaniu ideału zamieszkiwania – o utopiach urbanistyczno – społecznych z mitem idealnego miasta w tle” (2010), „Mitologizacja przestrzeni miejskiej” (2012).
ZBIGNIEW MAĆKÓW (Wroclaw) – an architect running “Maćków Pracownia Projektowa”, one of the largest architectural studios in Wroclaw. He is a president of the Lower Silesian Regional Chamber of Architects and a curator on architectural matters of the European Capital of Culture in 2016.
ZUZANA MATKOVSKA (Kosice) – a member of the Tabaćka Kulturfabrik centre, a journalist and PR specialist. She is interested in communication and media cooperation. She was born and brought up in Kosice.
